Middle School Mission Trip 2008 !

You can be the hands for God's work on earth!

St. Joseph Parish and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church are teaming up on a Mission Trip for Middle School Age members (currently in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade).

When?
July 20 – July 25, 2007

Where?
Waubay, in northeastern South Dakota. We will stay at a lakeside camp there and  serve in the surrounding communities, including the Lake Traverse Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation. The camp has bunks and showers, and is located on a lake for canoeing and swimming.

What’s a Mission Trip?

A Mission Trip (or “Service Trip”) is a time spent helping people in need – being the real hands of Jesus Christ.  “Mission” means “to send,” so we are sent to help other communities through our work and who we are.  It’s about attitude – challenging yourself and stretching out of the usual routine to give to others. It’s about being flexible and living with other people in a committed, Christian group. It’s about time with God. In each day there is worship, witness, work, fun, and friends. It is amazing and unforgettable.

What do we do?
Our work is whatever the community needs: helping at nursing homes and shelters, interacting with children at summer programs or centers, painting, helping elders’ with yards, and project that care for the environment.

Why are you telling us now?
Wednesday, September 26 is when registration will begin on a first-come basis. Will registrations be taken after that date? Yes, until November 1, but keep in mind that this is “first-come-first-registered.” We will start a waiting list once the slots fill. It takes all year to get ready for the mission trip:  fundraising, team building nights with Our Savior’s, and a summer afternoon spent in team development.

What’s the cost?
Before fundraising, the real cost is $450. That will cover the cost of lodging, food, transportation, materials, adult leaders, and a fun activity. We expect that amount will be significantly reduced through fundraising. Last year, the cost started at $440 and dropped to $365 - $150 because of the fundraising work of the youth and parents and the generosity of St. Joe’s parishioners. Everyone is expected to participant in general fundraising; individuals may choose to do additional fundraising.

Deadline?
November 1
is the first deadline to reserve a space. We estimate St. Joe’s will be able to take 30 participants and 5 adult leaders.  See the contract for details.
