Faith formation in Middle School/Junior High has three parts: education, social, and service. Those three components integrate to meet the spiritual development needs of young adolescents.

Religious education  for 7th & 8th grade class meetings are Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:30 pm.  Students in 7th grade meet from September to December.  8th Grade students meet from January to April. The education program includes small groups facilitated by adult catechists, large group activities, guest speakers, and prayer. The curriculum includes Scripture and the Identity of Jesus (7th grade), and Concepts of Catholic Identity and Decision-Making (8th grade).  Each class decides on and completes a service project sometime during their meeting time. In the past, projects have included collecting goods for homeless teens, helping with preschool classes, serving coffee and donuts after mass, bell ringing for Salvation Army, and serving Loaves and Fishes.

Monthly Throughout the school year, there are social events for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders: FUN FRIDAYS.  We have gone on a Haunted Hayride, had a Wild West night at church, gone to the Metrodome Rollerblading, had a Bingo night, and snowtubed. Summertime in the past has brought an Orienteering Day, Valleyfair, summer cam, summer stretch and other chances to gather and share friendship and faith.

Knowing that faith is not just about learning and having fun together (although that’s a lot of it!), this year we have found ways of being of service to both the local and larger communities. The Liturgical Drama Club serves the community three times: presenting the Christmas pageant, and Easter story, and working with the Vacation Bible School kids in skits and games. A couple of times a semester, the grades that are not meeting are invited to help at the foodshelf, or with other service-learning projects. The junior high classes have taken on the job of keeping the church pews straightened. Also, middle-school kids serve the parish in hospitality and music ministries, as acolytes, in the nursery, and in many other areas of our parish life.  On Good Friday, 8th and 9th graders may fast for 30-hours at a retreat at church, to raise both awareness of hunger in the world and funds for World Vision.

Read about what parents of 7th and 8th graders are thinking about their children.
